Adoptions & Assisted Reproduction Law

We represent both adoptive parents and birth parents seeking to complete an adoption plan.

Maine law permits both private, independent adoptions, as well as agency adoptions. We advise our clients on all aspects of adoptions, including legal requirements and proceedings, interstate matters, and birth parent expenses.

In addition, we represent both intended parents and gestational carriers with regard to contracts for gestational surrogacy and court proceedings to ensure intended parents are declared legal parents on a child’s birth certificate at the time of birth. Maine law was clarified by an extensive statute called the Maine Parentage Act that regulates gestational carrier agreements and details the standards for a judicial finding of legal parentage in a variety of circumstances that correspond to many modern and less traditional family circumstances. Our adoption practice is on the cutting edge of these evolving concepts and can guide clients and other professionals through the developing law.
